Xbox Will Require Four Office Days a Week for Redmond Area Staff Starting in February

Xbox is asking more of its people's commutes. Starting February 1, 2027, most Xbox employees who live near Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, will be required to work from the office at least four days a week, according to an internal memo seen by The Verge.

Microsoft asked employees to return to the office three days a week last year. The new rule raises that requirement by one day for a large part of the gaming division.

Who the rule covers

The memo, from Xbox chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson, spells out the scope. "Starting February 1st, 2027, Xbox employees in Puget Sound who live within 50 commuting miles of Studio D are required to work from the office a minimum of four days a week," she wrote.

The change applies only to staff close to the Redmond campus. The Verge reports that established in office practices at Xbox studios appear to remain unchanged. Employees who already have exemptions from Microsoft's office rules will need to submit them again.

The reasoning behind it

Pearson framed the change as a response to feedback from Xbox employees and a "need to create more opportunities for people to work together."

"We have thousands of Xbox employees within commuting distance of Redmond," she wrote. "Taking advantage of that proximity and working together in person makes it easier to review work, resolve issues, and make decisions without the burden of scheduling another meeting."

The memo also sets an expectation for leadership. "Leaders should be present, and coming into the office should not mean spending the same day on Teams calls from a different building," Pearson wrote, adding that the commute "should be worth the investment," especially for people traveling 40 to 50 miles.

The context employees will notice

The timing is hard to separate from other news at the company. The Verge notes the policy arrived a day after a report suggested Microsoft was planning more Xbox layoffs this month and in November and January. In July, Microsoft said it planned to eliminate around 20 percent of Xbox jobs by the end of its financial year in June 2027.

For workers, that combination of tighter office rules and job cuts can feel like pressure from two directions at once. For managers, it raises the bar. If people are asked to spend more time and money getting to the office, the days there need to be productive and collaborative.

The memo itself seems to recognize that. By telling leaders to be present and warning against days spent on video calls from another building, it puts some of the responsibility for a good office day on management, not only on the people making the drive.

What professionals can take from it

If your employer is moving toward more office time, a few steps can help you adjust.

Know the details. Read the policy closely, including the distance rules, start date and how exemptions work, so you can plan rather than react.

Make the office days count. Save collaborative work, reviews and problem solving for in person days, and use remote time, if you have it, for focused work.

Talk early about real constraints. If caregiving, health or a long commute makes a new schedule hard, raise it with your manager or HR well before the deadline.

Watch the bigger picture. Office policy changes often travel with other business decisions. Staying informed helps you make smart choices about your role and your next move.

Return to office debates are far from over, and Xbox's four day rule shows that some large employers are still pushing for more time together. February 1 gives Redmond area staff a little over three months to prepare.
