OpenAI Puts a 2026 IPO on Ice as Altman Calls a Listing Ill-Advised

Not this year
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said the company is likely to delay its IPO to 2027 and described a 2026 listing as ill-advised. The comment landed beside Anthropic's public call to slow frontier-model work.
Investors who had treated a 2026 offering as a calendar event had to reprice both the stock complex around OpenAI and the idea that AI capital spending only goes up.
Safety language with a market effect
Altman tied the pause to unresolved safety and alignment issues rather than to a simple valuation tantrum. Markets still translated it as less near-term supply of a mega-deal and more uncertainty about the build-out.
What still has to be true in 2027
Governance, compute contracts and a cleaner risk narrative. An IPO delayed is not an IPO cancelled. It is a year of extra questions.
