NSA Plans Historic Restructuring Around AI and Cyber Defense

A new org chart at Fort Meade

The National Security Agency is launching a major restructuring, according to reporting on 14 September 2026. The plan would stand up about five new organizations at Fort Meade and steer more of the agency toward artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Officials describe the move as a response to how adversaries now collect, encrypt and attack networks — work that no longer fits neatly inside Cold War-era collection shops.

Why the timing matters

The change lands in the same week the White House is arguing the United States must not slow its AI race with China. An intelligence service rebuilt around models and cyber operations is the classified half of that argument.
